View Full Version : How artists can promote themselves on the internet

there seems to be millions of unknown artists trying to make a name for themselves on the net. Most knock up an lp at home and expect people to just pay for it cos they are your myspace friend but we decided against this. We believe that we need to build demand and support before making our tunes available to buy, the net gives us direct contact with music fans, so if we cant get enough music fans asking to buy our tunes then its going to be very difficult to try and sell anything .
We decided to use podcasts and select free tracks to try and start building our fanbase before we make any product available to buy.
Other artists - add to this thread with your own ideas on how to build your profile on this worldwide web and see what we can learn from each other.

Hi BigPeople

First of all
WELCOME to the forum,
and we hope you take a look around.

Thanks for your post, and you make an interesting point
Are you thinking of buulding your own web-site.
I believe MySpace to be as good as anything on the net for promoting,
original music, at no up front cost.
I tend to agree that unsigned artists, are asking a little too much,
when expecting, added friends to pay for their music.
However the bigger picture is this.
MySpace gives exposure to countless people in the music business,
who are constantly scouring the pages for opportunities.
Record companies particularly are looking for viable
business opportunities, and I know this from experience.

Any suggestions as to improve on this are most welcome.

Hi
Hope this helps in a small way! This isnt spam i promise!
Im here to champion the cause for a fantastic internet video channel for unsigned bands and artists.
www.thedownloadgeneration.com streams 24hrs a day playing an eclectic video mix of pure global unsigned talent!.

They are looking for unsigned acts to submit videos for streaming. Its as simple as that! Its free,no catch,no subscription, and no false promises, just good old fashioned exposure!, its simply a rapidly expanding unsigned video community.Somewhere for us all to belong to and an opportunity to view our videos in the right envoironment, amongst their own, video jukebox style!.

For any unsigned band or artist with a video this is a no brainer!. Word is gathering pace and www.thedownloadgeneration.com is going to be the place to be seen!
As said - No Catch!.

Besta Luck All!

Hi,

I've been talking to a lot of music industry members over the past months, it seems to me that they are no longer keen on myspace, some stating that they receive 100+ messages/request everyday, and that they can;t keep up with it. Also they say that there is so many time wasters on there that they don't have the time to trawl through to find the good ones.

That said, for building a fan base i don't think there is anywhere better than myspace, just from sheer number of users/listens/views you'll get on there.

I would recommend every band to have a myspace, its free so why wouldn't you. I use all the free sites extensively.

I work for an unsigned music promoter named Keynote Unsigned, we have links with industry organisations to gain exposure for our members. Times are hard for labels and getting signed is harder than ever, so i read somewhere. But there's loads of gigs and live music happening which is a really good thing. We get gigs for our members through a lot of promoters, they like us becuase we co-promote gigs, so our bands are more likely to 'bring people' something they like.

Please take a look at the site Keynote Unsigned (http://www.keynoteunsigned.co.uk). Please tell me your thoughts, we love getting feedback!

Thanks guys,
Adem
