In the Birmingham Mail , Tony Collins wrote : “A star-studded line-up of local legends made it a glittering night to remember as they celebrated the long awaited re-opening of a Birmingham Town Hall . Some of the greatest rock legends ever joined fellow home-grown talent Jasper Carrott in welcoming fans back to the landmark venue after a gap of ten years and a £. 35 million restoration.
The regular Brum Rocks Live line-up of Midlands musical talent , headed by the Move's Bev Bevan and Trevor Burton ,were swelled by the likes of Robert Plant, the legendary West Bromwich-born frontman of Led Zeppelin, Dave Pegg from Fairport Convention , and the Rockin' Berries .
It almost resembled a candidate's list for the nearby Birmingham Walk of Stars, with comedian Jasper Carrott-who saw his plaque unveiled in Broad Street last month-providing a hilarious stand-up routine.
Those fans lucky enough to get tickets, even at £.50 a head, were able to reflect on money well spent. But the real winner was Children's Hospital with proceeds from the fund-raising concert going to its Red Balloon Appeal,to build a new burns centre.
It was undoubtedly Robert Plant who caused the biggest stir, with Zeppelin preparing for their massive one-off reunion gig next month.
He got a great response with an inusual version of Led Zeppelin's Black Dog ,and also perfomed Bob Dylan's Corrina Corrina during a brief, but captivating slot.
As Bev Bevan commented : “ About 20 million people wished they'd been here tonight”.
He also revealed that all the artists were playing for free in aid for the hospital appeal.
The first half was devoted to Birmingham's rock 'n' roll history ,narrated by author Laurie Hornsby, with Steve Gibbons and Danny King performing great numbers such as That's Alright Mama , Shakin' All Over , and Bye Bye Johnny.
And after Jasper, who revealed he was a roadie during the early Birmingham music days, got the crowd laughing,it was the turn of Move classics including Flowers In The Rain and I Can Hear The Grass Grow, together with a moving tribute to the late Carl Wayne.”
