In July Arts Council England launched Take it away, a new scheme aimed at making musical instruments more affordable to those on lower incomes.

The scheme’s objective is to remove the financial barrier which may have discouraged many people from learning and playing a musical instrument in the past.

It allows individuals over 18 to apply for a loan of up to £2,000 for the purchase of any kind of musical instrument, and pay it back in nine monthly instalments (with a minimum 10% deposit), completely interest free.

Take it away loans are now available through a network of almost 100 musical stores nationally, with nine in the West Midlands. The retailers will be able to provide expert assistance in choosing an instrument, as well as one suitable to the customer’s needs. The retailers that are taking part in the scheme regionally are:

· Hibernian Violins (Malvern)
· Hobgoblin Music (Birmingham)
· Music 47 (Worcester)
· Musical Instrument Repairs and Sales (Halesowen)
· Normans Ltd (Burton upon Trent)
· Pete Oakley Music (Burton upon Trent)
· Professional Music Technology (Birmingham)
· Stratford Music Shop (Stratford upon Avon)
· Vale Pianos (Pershore)
